Garage Door Panel Replacement: what the visit covers

Expect two visits.

Open, close, repeat, for years.

Expect two visits. On the first, the technician makes the door safe to use or safe to leave closed, identifies the manufacturer and model, measures the section, photographs the damage and its neighbours, and checks the hinges, rollers, tracks, cables and springs for anything the impact disturbed. The replacement section is then ordered to that specification, since sections are made to order for each model rather than kept on a shelf. On the second visit the section is installed, the hardware is refitted, the springs are re-tensioned if needed, and the door and opener are tested through full cycles before the technician leaves.

Is a matching section still made?

Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.

Removing the damaged section

With the door secured and, where relevant, the springs unloaded, the hinges joining the damaged section to its neighbours are unbolted and the rollers slid out of the tracks. A section is wider than the opening between the tracks, so it comes out by tilting one end inward and walking it clear, occasionally after loosening a track bracket to gain a few millimetres. Two people handle a wide or insulated section because of its weight and its sharp edges. Once it is out, the technician checks the exposed edges of the sections above and below for damage that was hidden while the door was assembled.

A record of the door for next time

You leave with the door's identity written down: manufacturer, model or series, section height and thickness, panel design, colour code and the position of the section that was replaced. Keep it with the house papers or photograph it and file it on your phone. The next time a section, a hinge or a set of rollers is needed, that record turns a search into a straightforward order. It also tells any future technician what has already been changed and when, which helps them judge the rest of the door's age and condition without guessing.
